How Much Is Half a Hog?
A Minnesota half hog buyer’s guide from Feathered Acres Farm in Belgrade, MN: price, hanging weight, how much meat you get, cuts, freezer space and how ordering works.

The quick answer
- Half hog: $2.25/lb hanging weight. About 110 lbs hanging ≈ $248 to us, plus the butcher’s processing fee (billed separately by the butcher). You take home about 65–75 lbs of meat.
- Whole hog: $2.00/lb hanging weight. About 220 lbs hanging ≈ $440 to us, plus processing. You take home about 160 lbs of meat.
- $210 deposit holds your hog. The balance is due once it’s weighed.
What is hanging weight?
Hanging weight is what the hog weighs at the butcher after it has been gutted, but before it’s cut up. That’s the weight you’re charged on. Once the bones and trim come out, the meat you take home is less than the hanging weight. It’s a confusing process if you’ve never bought from a farm before, so please ask us anything!
How much meat do you get from half a hog?
Usually around 65–75 lbs of meat from a half hog, and around 160 lbs from a whole hog. Bone-in cuts, boneless cuts and how much you turn into sausage all change the final amount.
What cuts come in a half hog?
You choose. After you place your deposit, Trisha will call you and walk through your cuts. A typical order includes:
- Pork Chops or Pork Loins
- Boston Butt/Pork Shoulder
- Bacon
- Breakfast Links
- Smoked Brats
- Custom Brat (available upon request)
- Ground Pork (breakfast sausage or Italian sausage)
- Roasts
- Ham
How much freezer space do I need?
Plan on about 4.5 cubic feet for a half hog and about 9 cubic feet for a whole hog. A small chest freezer holds a half hog with room to spare.
